upper range of linearity is -2000 mgfL. Thus this method may be performed with mecomum samples contaming HbF as little as 10% of total Hb by weight, for which the original color of the specimen may be brownish-green. Samples with relatively high Hb content may need to be diluted. To obtain the proper dilution, use a freshly made hemolysate containing 20 L of blood in 5 mL of water for comparison. There are no commercial quality-control samples available for assay of these specimens. However, control specimens can be easily prepared by lysing fresh blood cells in deionized water to generate a Hb solution of -10 mgfL. A positive blood specimen containing HbF should also be used. These solutions can be aliquoted into 1.5-mL fractions and, stored frozen or refrigerated, should be stable for at least 6 months. Stored at 4#{176}C, HbF decreases by -10% after 1 year. An HbF content >50% probably indicates that the blood is fetal in origin. Blood with HbF <10% definitely comes from the mother. Obviously, this procedure can-

Comparison of Point of Care (POC) Testing of Glucose by B Braun Glucometer and Hemocue Glucose 201+ Analyser Versus Centralised Testing in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
BACKGROUND Neonatal hypoglycemia is the most common carbohydrate metabolic disturbance seen in case of neonates and especially in preterm neonates. Accurate and rapid determination of hypoglycemia and its prompt treatment is of utmost importance to decrease morbidity and mortality of neonates. AIMS To estimate blood glucose in neonates and test the efficacy of HemoCue Glucose 201+ analyser an...
متن کاملHemoglobin estimation by the HemoCue® portable hemoglobin photometer in a resource poor setting
BACKGROUND In resource poor settings where automated hematology analyzers are not available, the Cyanmethemoglobin method is often used. This method though cheaper, takes more time. In blood donations, the semi-quantitative gravimetric copper sulfate method which is very easy and inexpensive may be used but does not provide an acceptable degree of accuracy. The HemoCue® hemoglobin photometer ha...
متن کاملAccuracy of bedside glucose measurement from three glucometers in critically ill patients.
OBJECTIVE Implementation of strict glucose control in most intensive care units has resulted in increased use of point-of-care glucose devices in the intensive care unit. The aim of this study was to determine the reliability of point-of-care testing glucose meters among critically ill patients under intensive insulin treatment. DESIGN Prospective observational study. PATIENTS Intensive car...
متن کاملMeasuring blood glucose in neonatal units: how does hemocue compare?
Rapid and reliable determination of blood glucose concentration is essential during the neonatal period to prevent adverse neurodevelopmental outcome from hypoglycaemia. Despite their unreliability, reagent strip methods continue to be used extensively in neonatal nurseries due to their rapidity and convenience. Recently, a new portable laboratory standard technique has been introduced (HemoCue...
متن کاملMonitoring neonatal hypoglycemia with the Accu-chek advantage II glucose meter: the cautionary tale of galactosemia.
To the Editor: Hand-held glucose meters are a practical solution for measuring glucose in neonatal intensive care units and special care nurseries because of their portability, the immediacy of results, and minimal blood volume requirements compared with dispatching samples for central laboratory analysis. We have used the Roche Accu-chek Advantage II meter for some time in our neonatal intensi...
